Power and Purpose of Literature

One of my favourite activities is browsing books at Barnes & Noble, randomly picking up books and reading a couple of pages. I have discovered many great books in subjects outside my comfort zone in doing so. Wandering around in the “Literature” section at the bookstore, I was wondering about what “Literature” is. So here are some ideas.

Apparently the word “literature” is derived from the Latin word “literatura,” which means “writing formed with letters.” This obviously does not mean squat :)

I think it would be correct to define literature as an art form that uses language to express ideas, emotions, and experiences. Literature is not just a collection of words on a page but rather a reflection of human culture and society. As a philosopher once said:

“What is literature but a form of freedom?”

Literature is not limited to novels or poetry, but encompasses a wide range of written works, including plays, essays, memoirs, and even comic books. Literature can be both fiction and nonfiction, and can be written for both children and adults.

Literature allows us to enter the minds of others and experience their thoughts and emotions. Virginia Woolf once said, “The only way to render reality…
